MATAPEDIA-MONTREAL
CROSS RESIDENCIES

Launched by Quartier Éphémère, Centre d’arts visuels, and the Centre d’artistes Vaste et Vague in the fall of 2021, the Gare de Matapédia – Pôle artistique et communautaire is situated at the heart of life in the municipality of Matapédia, amidst the majestic and inspiring natural landscape of the Gaspé Peninsula. This contemporary visual arts project highlights local heritage by incorporating artist residencies, exhibition spaces, and outreach activities with the aim of creating a gathering place centered on art. This exchange program offers both a creative space outside major cities and visibility in urban areas, tailored to the artists’ needs.

For the third edition of this cross-residency program, Vaste et Vague and Quartier Éphémère invite artists to apply for three-month residencies: at the Matapédia Station for artists living outside the Gaspé region, and at the Darling Foundry for artists from the Gaspé region.

In Matapédia, the studio is located at the Gare, and the independent, centrally located living quarters are situated in the village. At the Darling Foundry, in a small industrial complex west of Old Montreal, the artist occupies one of the studio-apartments designated for artists in residence.

The four residencies, each lasting three months, will take place between August 2023 and June 2024. These periods were chosen to align with the school calendar in order to develop educational activities with schools, on the one hand, and to fill a less-busy niche with the aim of revitalizing and extending the tourist season, on the other. While in the Gaspé Peninsula this is an opportunity for artists to fully embrace their northern identity, in Montreal these periods coincide with a peak of activity in the cultural scene.
