CULTURAL DAYS MEETING
Current arts and fishing history
As part of the Culture Days, and as the opening of its 2023-2024 program, Matapédia Station – Artistic and community center, presents a double artistic and historical program, on Friday September 29, 2023 in formula 5 to 7.
Firstly, the newly arrived artist in residence,Florencia Sosa Rey explains her artistic approach and offers an overview of the project she wishes to carry out during her three-month stay. A multidisciplinary artist whose practice is anchored in bodily sensitivity, Florencia Sosa Rey questions the sociocultural history that her body and the objects that surround it carry, in order to explore the notion of memory. Her works revolve around drawing, performance, textiles and collaboration with the community.
Subsequently, the historian Michel Goudreau offers a conference on a controversial subject: History of millionaires and fish: Matapédia and salmon fishing. During this talk, he addresses the themes of the beginning of the Restigouche Salmon Club, the first Mi'gmaq fishing guides, the famous million dollar pool, the tragic end of Stanford White, architect of numerous fishing camps on our rivers and Much more. This illustrated conversation will reveal often little-known facts about the history of salmon fishing on the Restigouche and Matapédia rivers.
The evening will be accompanied by a light snack, refreshments and a musical atmosphere.
Come celebrate Culture Days with us at Matapédia Station – Artistic and community center.
